Lake HuronLake Huron's shores stretch across the east side of Michigan and offer a variety of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Camping and hiking trails trace the shoreline along with numerous lighthouse museums and marinas. Several harbors which can be found in the immediate area include Harrisville, Alpena, Presque Isle, Rogers City & Hammond Bay. Lake Huron is heavily used by shipping vessels, especially lakers, the long, narrow vessels that carry iron ore from the Lake Superior region to ports on Lake Erie. These enormous crafts can be seen from many shores along Lake Huron. Fishing the Great Lakes is a popular event among locals and visitors. If you do not have your own gear, charter services are available in Alpena. Several fishing tournaments also take place during the summer months such as the Brown Trout Festival and the Salmon Tournament both offering great fun and prizes! Fact: The area of Lake Huron, including such arms as Georgian Bay and Saginaw Bay, is 23,000 sq. mi., of which 13,900 sq. mi. are in Canada. The lake's drainage basin covers about 51,737 sq. mi. The maximum length of the lake is 206 mi., the greatest width is 183 mi., and the maximum depth is 750 ft. Wow! |
Hubbard LakeHubbard Lake is one of the area's most sought after lakes. With 8,850 acres and depths of up to 90 feet, this lake can support a multitude of recreations. Both an excellent fishing and swimming lake, Hubbard Lake is not only perfect for any angler, but the entire family as well! Public access sites and boat ramps are situated at 5 convenient locations around the lake. Sportsmen can enjoy fishing Northern Pike, Perch, Bass, Walleye, White Fish and other pan fish year round. Hubbard Lake is also surrounded by rolling hardwoods which offer numerous hiking and snowmobile trails. Many events take place around the Hubbard Lake area including the annual buck pole contest which is held at the north end of Hubbard Lake at Sunrise Side Realty, November 15th. The Manjidoin Days Festival is also an annual event taking place in June, just north of the lake at the Lions Park. Softball tournaments, live entertainment, cook-outs and craft shows can all be enjoyed at the festival. Hubbard Lake is located in Alcona County, just south of Alpena County and is approximately 19 miles from the city of Alpena. |
Grand LakeAs you can see, Grand Lake is an attractive all-sport lake in Presque Isle county. Excellent fishing and swimming can be found on this 6000 acre lake with depths up to 25 feet. Favorite fish include bass, walleye, perch, pike and other pan fish. Grand Lake is also located near Lake Huron. An excellent marina is available for launching boats into the great lake. It is located at the north end of Grand Lake Road, near the Portage Restaurant and two historic lighthouse museums. A convenient state park is also located near the north end of Grand Lake where affordable camping is available. Snowmobile, hiking and biking trails are abundant throughout the state park. Grand Lake is an excellent family oriented lake. Many inns, motels and private rentals are available and offer daily and weekly occupancy. Directions from Alpena: Take US 23 North out of Alpena. You can see Grand Lake approximately 20 miles north of Alpena off US 23. To explore the areas around the lake, you may turn off US 23 onto Hwy 638. |
Long LakeLong Lake is conveniently located approximately 10 miles north of Alpena in both Alpena & Presque Isle Counties. This all-sport lake consists of 5,652 acres with depths up to 25'. Walleye, bass, perch and other pan fish are abundant and enjoyed year round. There are 4 public access sites on the lake with boat ramps. Directions from Alpena: Take US 23 North from Alpena, approximately 12 miles north you will see Long Lake to your left. You may follow the shoreline by taking either Long Lake Road or Shubert Hwy off US 23. |
Ess LakeEss Lake is a lovely all-sports lake located in Montmorency county. Although it is only 114 acres in size, depths reach to 50' or more. Located near Ess Lake are several other lakes including Long Lake, Avalon Lake (both all-sport lakes) and several other quaint bodies of water. Directions from Alpena: Take M-32 West from Alpena to Hillman. Turn north on Cty Road 451 for about 1 mile. Turn west on Cty. Road 459 for 3 miles. Head west on Cty Road 624 3 miles then turn north on Ess Lake. |
Beaver LakeBeaver Lake is located in Alpena County, near M-65 South. The area consists of beautiful rolling hardwoods, campgrounds and wildlife at its best. Although Beaver Lake is only 665 acres in size, it's depths reach up to 80'. An abundance of fish are found in the lake such as smelt, walleye, pike, tiger muskey, bullhead, both small & large mouth bass and a variety of pan fish. Property owners in the Beaver Lake Association enjoy the benefits of a private boat launch and the recreational use of a wooded 600 acre parcel. |
Thunder Bay RiverThe Thunder Bay River is the foundation which started Alpena. Many years ago, settlers used the river for a variety of industries such as logging and trapping. From this the village grew into what is now the city of Alpena. Now many people enjoy recreational use of the Thunder Bay River such as boating and fishing. The river flows through several counties including Montmorency, Alpena, Alcona and Presque Isle where it finally exits into Lake Huron. |
The Ocqueoc RiverThe Ocqueoc River, just as the Thunder Bay River, twists and turns through the countryside until it reaches the waters of Lake Huron. Because of this, many fish such as trout and salmon use the Ocqueoc River's flowing current to spawn. Anglers look forward to this seasonal display and to the challenge of river fishing. The mouth of the river can be found in Presque Isle County near Hammond Bay. The river then flows through the land and several bodies of water such as Ocqueoc Lake, Barnhart Lake and Lake Nettie. These quaint bodies of water attract and preserve a variety of wildlife. Another unique feature of the Ocqueoc River are the Ocqueoc Falls. These are the only falls in the lower peninsula of Michigan and can easily be enjoyed. Camping and hiking trails are available near the falls which are located between Onaway and Millersburg. |
